Honoring Joaquin Oliver

Imagine someone infinitely special, who personifies love, and lights up the room with his electric smile and crazy dance moves. A guy fiercly loyal to his family and friends, a basketball player and Dwyane Wade super fan. He usually plays music for me to make his entrance over the top. He loves to run over to me just before I fall asleep for the night, and we chat about what he wants me to tell his family. Joaquin "Guac" Oliver was 17 when his life was tragically taken in the MSD High School shooting on Valentine's Day in 2018. I never met him in person, but I know him well.

Joaquin has been visiting me in spirit for 8 years. His goal? To continually prove he is still here with his family and profess his love for them, with his over the top personality and antics. I am 100% all in with his demands for me to spoil his beautiful, strong mom, Patricia Oliver. Patricia and I have an incredible, deep bond, unlike any other friendship. Each year, on her birthday, Joaquin comes with a specific bouquet of flowers I recreate for him to gift her. Knowing Joaquin and his love has changed my life in indescribable ways. He never ceases to amaze me.

Joaquin was a natural born activist and his parents are using his voice to change gun laws through the non-profit Change The Ref, which Linda is involved with.

Since the day we met, she had shown me that I can be in touch with Joaquin the way I used to, by hearing directly from him like when he was with us on this plane.
